Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Dr. Awah Talks About Wisdom Teeth Extractions
For many patients, wisdom tooth removal is an inevitable part of getting older. The “third molars” generally begin to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. When they do not have adequate space to erupt, wisdom teeth may become impacted. This impaction can cause severe pain in the mouth and jaw, and many times, extracting these teeth is the most common treatment option. Drs. Mulokozi Lugakingira and Franklin Awah are highly specialized oral surgeons and perform wisdom tooth extractions on a regular basis. We strive to make your wisdom teeth extraction as painless as possible through gentle and less invasive modern procedures.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth can create serious problems to your oral health. In addition to crowding and damaging adjacent teeth, wisdom teeth that are impacted can cause inflammation of the gums, jaw pain and stiffness, and even the development of cysts and tumors around the wisdom tooth itself. We recommend early removal of wisdom teeth to avoid any of these complications and to ensure you sustain great oral health. Utilizing our Cone Beam CT scanner, we can receive a highly accurate image of your teeth and jaw to ensure high-risk or difficult wisdom teeth are removed as painlessly and carefully as possible.
You may need to have your wisdom teeth extracted if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Jaw pain or stiffness
- Irritated or bleeding gums
- Swelling around the jaw
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Pain when chewing
Extracting Your Wisdom Teeth
From your initial consultation to the day of your treatment (many times, these are the same day), we will instruct and educate you on the entire process, and pre- and post-operative care. Most patients needing wisdom teeth extractions receive treatment under I.V. sedation to ensure a highly comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free procedure. Once completed, you will be discharged for full recovery at home. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment based on your surgery outcomes. Wisdom teeth extraction may sound daunting, but it is a routine procedure that our doctors enjoy and perform on a weekly basis. Your experience with us will be safe and effective!
